چکیده

Abstract On 30 September 2021, a saildrone uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) was steered into Category 4 Hurricane Sam, the most intense storm of 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. It measured significant wave heights up to 14 m (maximum height 27 m) and near-surface winds exceeding 55 s −1 . This first time in more than seven decades observations that real USV transmitted scientific data, images, videos dynamic ocean near hurricane’s eyewall. The part five-saildrone deployment NOAA Observations Mission. These saildrones observed atmospheric oceanic conditions five other tropical storms, which two became hurricanes. Such inside cyclones help advance understanding prediction hurricanes, with ultimate goal saving lives protecting property. pioneered new practice coordinating measurements by saildrones, underwater gliders, airborne dropsondes make simultaneous near-collocated air-sea interface, immediately below, atmosphere above. experimental opened door era using remotely piloted systems observe one extreme phenomena on Earth way previously impossible. article provides an overview this mission, describes how were coordinated observing platforms, presents preliminary results from these demonstrate their potential utility motivate further data analysis, offers vision future combined platforms.

Coyote unmanned aircraft system observations in Hurricane Edouard (2014)

Horizontal wind, temperature, and moisture observations are presented from two Coyote unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flights in the boundary layer of Hurricane Edouard (2014). The first flight sampled the meteorological conditions in the eye and eyewall at altitudes from 900 to 1500m while Edouard was a major hurricane (105 kt) on 16 September 2014. The following day, a second Coyote sampled th...

Loop Current Warming by Hurricane Wilma

[1] Hurricanes mix and cool the upper ocean, as shown here in observations and modeling of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico during the passage of hurricane Wilma. Curiously, the upper ocean around the Loop Current warmed prior to Wilma’s entrance into the Gulf. The major cause was increased volume and heat transports through the Yucatan Channel produced by storm-induced convergences in ...

Prediction of Hurricane Motion by Statistical Methods

Equations for the prediction of hurricane tracks have been developed by use of statistical methods. Data at sea level, 700 mb., and 500 mb. were selected as predictors. Forecasts are prepared in 12-hr. steps for periods up to 48 hr. The forecast equations have been tested on an operational basis during the 1964 and 1965 hurricane seasons. The accuracy of these forecasts compares favorably with ...

Further Observations on Blocking Zeros in Linear Muitivariabie systems (RESEARCH NOTE).

While attempting to clarify the confusion concerning the conceptualization of "blocking zeros" in state space in the recent literature, some new observations are made on the relationship between pole-zero cancellation and transmission blocking. An important distinction between uncontrollable and unobservable eigenvalue s is pointed out; and it is argued that the description of a Blocking Zero, ...

Loop Current Mixed Layer Energy Response to Hurricane Lili (2002). Part I: Observations

The ocean mixed layer response to a tropical cyclone within and immediately adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current is examined. In the first of a two-part study, a comprehensive set of temperature, salinity, and current profiles acquired from aircraft-deployed expendable probes is utilized to analyze the three-dimensional oceanic energy evolution in response to Hurricane Lili’s (2002) pass...
